Thanks for completing another Summer Learning Journey activity, 'Off the Menu', and for giving us your opinion on whether or not you think that people should be fined $100,000 for overfishing in Aotearoa. I'm so happy to read that you do think that it is fair, and your reasons for this being that if we overfish, we run the risk of depleting fish populations in our waters. Not only this though— if we decrease populations in areas of water, we really damage the ecosystems within the awa (water) which affects other species and their habitats, too.
Speaking of which, have you heard of the Māui dolphin? They're native to New Zealand and their habitat resides on the west coast of the North Island— they're currently on the brink of extinction with only 63 remaining on earth. This is a very sad reality, but the WWF New Zealand are working to try and help protect them by starting petitions directed at our Prime Minister to take action— how do you think you can help? Here's a link to the petition if you'd like to sign it: https://media.socialblue.com/-wwf-new-zealand?site_id=30971&tag=SB000000001219951&fromAp=1
A petition is a formally written request aimed at appealing to authority— so you can really help make a difference! But more than this, you can actually write to the Prime Minister yourself. I think that you'd do marvellously at this, based on what I've seen on your blog page already.
As you can see I have not been actively posting my work but for the last week of this Summer Learning Journey Programme, I will work on every single week 4 activity when I have the time... So, I have heard about the Maui Dolphin...
I have been learning about the endangered specifies for a couple of times but I'd love to sign in to the petition to help the 63 remaining dolphins! That's so sad, I wish we took action a lot earlier! But I do hope the population of Maui Dolphins would increase soon...
No need to apologise, I would rather you be doing other things outside of staring at your laptop screen— I have faith that you'll complete the programme to such a high standard, so please take your time.
On a positive note, you've earned yourself another 2 bonus points for thoughtfully responding to my comment :)
It is sad, isn't it? Unfortunately the population won't just increase though. As this petition is aimed at helping their habitat it means that we need to take action in order for their habitat to be left alone by set-netting and trawling. How we can take action now is to ask our government to protect the Māui dolphin's habitat.
Please structure your comments as follows: Positive - Something done well Thoughtful - A sentence to let us know you actually read/watched or listened to what they had to say Helpful - Give some ideas for next time or ask a question you want to know more about
